How do I determine towing weights of 5th wheelers?
The towing weight of a 5th wheeler is determined by
subtracting the hitch weight from the overall weight of the 5th wheeler.
So the empty towing weight of the Australian Flagstaff 23 (dry - tare) is
approximately 2250kg (depending on level of accessories) less the hitch
weight of approx 350kg or a towing weight of
approximately 1900kg. Even fully laden (ATM 2850 kg) the towing weight
(GTM) is still
approximately 2500kg
(depending how the weight is distributed), which is within the
towing capacity of many standard pick-ups.
Please note some vehicle manufacturers specify the towing capacity as
GTM, others specify ATM. If they specify the ATM you must include the
hitch weight as well. Please check with you vehicle supplier.
Note: Aggregate Trailer Mass - ATM is the total weight a trailer can
weigh (including the hitch weight) and still be legally towed. Please
see glossary of terms.
